It is 2026, and I have come to realise something that took me years to fully understand. Talent alone is not enough. For a long time, I believed that if I focused on my craft, stayed consistent, and kept improving, the right opportunities would eventually find me. And while that is partly true, it is not the full picture anymore. Today, being an artist or creative means wearing many hats and being your own biggest promoter.

One of the most common frustrations I see in pattern design is this feeling that something is missing. The motifs are nice, the colors work, the repeat is correct, yet the pattern still feels flat or forgettable.

As designers, it’s tempting to constantly chase the new. New ideas, new collections, new directions. But recently, I found myself doing the opposite: looking back.
